Social Studies
Students study many different subjects in Social Studies.
They include Communities, Government, Map Skills, Natural
Resources, Cultures, History, Goods, Services, Producers,
and Consumers. We study current events through the use of a
weekly publication entitled “Time For Kids”. Through the use
of this publication the children are able to learn all
about the election process and express their opinions on the
candidates at the same time. They learn to appreciate our
natural resources and the importance of taking care of them
for future generations. During the year we study different
cultures throughout the world.
Science
Science is an important subject at Littleton. In fifth
grade, Science is tested by the FCAT test. It is very
important to understand the Scientific Process as well
as the vocabulary for Science. We have an awesome
Science lab teacher too. Mrs. Hassett teaches the
students the “hands on” side of Science,
while classroom teachers introduce and practice skills
and vocabulary.
Word of the Day
One of the quickest ways to develop students’ success in
all areas of Reading, including Science, Social Studies,
and Math, is to develop vocabulary. Often background
knowledge and vocabulary are all that is needed to fill
those gaps and develop those skills. Throughout the
year, we run various Word of the Day activities. Our
principal will announce the word and definition on the
morning news, and then the students learn the word
throughout the day. We post them around the school and
also have incentives for students who learn the new
vocabulary. We keep them posted on the TV throughout
the day and the students love learning their new
vocabulary Word of the Day!
Writer's Club
Writer’s Club allows students to showcase their creative
writing. Each month students are picked to hang their
essays up in the school. All students, faculty,
families, and community members are able to see the
outstanding accomplishments our students make.
What Are You Reading?
This program encourages children to curl up with a good book
and express their feelings about the book. It motivates
others to pick up a book and do their own review.
After School Tutorials
Littleton provides tutorial practice for students
scoring a Level 1 or Level 2 on FCAT testing. This
class allows qualified teachers to work in small groups
with students to reinforce the necessary reading and
math skills. This program builds confidence which in
turn helps our children perform to a higher level. This
is truly a wonderful addition to our school.

Gifted/Enrichment Classes
The
Gifted/Enrichment classes at Littleton are very
active. We are extremely busy with our Rainforest
study, Power Points, and creating our futuristic
Amusement Parks. We enjoy problem solving and
researching various topics. We especially enjoy
writing poems, and short stories. We have enjoyed
two field trips so far this year. One trip was to
Wanna Do City, and the other was to Broadway Palm
Theatre. Soon we will be going to visit the animals
at Busch Gardens. This year we have “adopted” seven
friends located across the street at Horizon
Village. It is fun for us to write to our friends
and give them presents from our school garden.
